Hearing loss: signs, causes and what to do next

Hearing loss often builds slowly. People turn the TV up, avoid noisy restaurants, or blame other speakers for mumbling. A clinic test is the reliable way to see what is going on. At HearMed the private hearing test is free, takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and does not need a GP referral.

We see people aged 12 and over at clinics in Tullamore, Portlaoise, Portumna, Newbridge, Templemore and Athenry.

Signs worth checking

Asking people to repeat themselves, struggling on phone calls, finding group chat tiring, or noticing one ear is weaker than the other are common prompts. Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing) often travels with hearing loss but is not the whole story on its own.

Types in plain language

Sensorineural loss involves the inner ear or hearing nerve and is the most common age-related pattern. Conductive loss means sound is blocked or dampened in the outer or middle ear, for example by wax. Mixed loss is both. Only an examination plus audiometry can sort these out properly.

Wax first, then test

If wax is occluding the canal, we say so before we test. Microsuction wax removal is €60 in clinic or €100 at home. Clearing the blockage can restore clarity without aids. When loss remains, we discuss options honestly.

Treatment and cost context

Hearing aids start from fully covered basic PRSI models when you qualify. Advanced models from €350 per aid after the PRSI grant (€850 before). PRSI: up to €500 per ear, €1,000 for both ears, once every four years, taken off at the till when you qualify. Warranty four years, 60-day money-back, free batteries for life on paid aids.

Medical card vs private test

HSE audiology for medical-card holders usually needs a GP referral and a waitlist. HearMed's private test does not. Choose the path that fits your timing and cover.
